Biography

Dr. Kenichi Takahata received the B.S. degree in Physics from Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan, in 1990 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2004 and 2005, respectively. He is Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and a Canada Research Chair in Advanced Micro/Nanofabrication and MEMS. He had held industrial research positions for twelve years with Panasonic in Japan and 3M in USA before joining UBC. He also held a visiting scientist position at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for two years. Prof. Takahata has published over 100 papers and holds nine issued patents. He has served on a number of committees of international conferences, including, the IEEE MEMS, the IEEE Transducers, and the IEEE Sensors where he has been Track (Co-)Chair. In 2015, he was elected as a member of the International Steering Committee of the IEEE Transducers. He also served as the editor of two books in MEMS. He is part of the editorial boards of Frontiers for its M/NEMS section and of IET Electronics Letters, and currently serving as the guest editor of a special issue on implantable microsystems in Micromachines.

Research Interest

Prof. Takahata has a broad research focus around MEMS, micro/nanomanufacturing, and nanotechnology, including bioMEMS and implantable microsystems, wireless microdevices, nanomaterials integration, and microplasma control and applications.
